15 Rarest Pokémon in Pokémon Go And How To Find Them (2023)

15 Rarest Pokémon in Pokémon Go And How To Find Them (1)

It is no secret that the world has become Pokémon-obsessed since the release of theworldwide phenomenon and mobile gamePokémon Go. The Augmented Reality (AR) app has become an overnight sensation, garnering an audience that even surpasses the franchise's core fanbase. Trainers have been charged with the task of venturing out into the world in order to track and capture these Pokémon in hopes of collecting all 151 (until other generations of Pokémon are added). The only problem is, some of these creatures are incredibly hard to find.

This list counts down some of the rarest Pokémon in Pokémon Go; the creatures we are all struggling to find in order to complete our Pokédexs. Yes, it is true that different areas spawn different characters, butwhile some players may have one or two of the following Pokémon on their team, most other less fortunate souls will most likely be searching for these for weeks to come. For the majority of gamers obsessed with catching them all, acquiring the Pokémon on this list appears to be quite the tall order.

Here are the15 Rarest Pokémon in Pokémon Go.

15. Magmar

15 Rarest Pokémon in Pokémon Go And How To Find Them (2)

With only 12 fire-type Pokémon in the original 151 from the first generation, this specific demographic of creatures can be particularly hard to find out in the wild. In fact, it does not appear as though there is even one fire-type in which it is easy to find an abundance of (unless you are lucky enough to live or work near a spawning area). Even so, Magmar stands out as being among the rarest of all of theredhot fire-types.

For most players, finding a Magmar midgame might be a fairly daunting task as there are a good number of frequent users who have yet to come across this Pokémon. Finding one is certainly no simple task, and additionally, hatching this Pokémon out of an egg can be just as difficult as he is only known to be found in the 10km variety. Collecting a bunch of 10km eggs and going out for a nice long walk seems to be the best way of attaining this uncommon flamethrower. That said, make sure to have a lot of berries and Great Balls on hand just in case you are lucky enough to run into a wild Magmar.

14. Venusaur

15 Rarest Pokémon in Pokémon Go And How To Find Them (3)

Featured next on this list of seldom encountered creatures is the final evolution of one of the game's starter Pokémon, Venusaur. While any player is able to start off the game with this character's unevolved form Bulbasaur, finding enough of these wild plant-like Pokémon in order to obtain its final form can certainly prove to be a daunting endeavor. That fact alone, however, does not simply make Venusaur one of the rarest Pokémon in the game.

It was originally thought early on that Venusaurs were not obtainable in the wild, but due to a few occurrencesreported across the web, fans now know this to be false. These appearances certainly do not occur all too often, but still, some lucky few are, in fact, finding this rare specimen on their various Pokémon hunting adventures.

13. Blastoise

15 Rarest Pokémon in Pokémon Go And How To Find Them (4)

As the final evolution of one of the game's other starter Pokémon, Squirtle, Blastoise is another popular character that is extremely hard to obtain. Those who live or work near a sizable body of water may encounter a fair number of Squirtles, but that said, finding enough of these tiny turtles in order to acquire the fully evolved tank may prove difficult for most players. Much like the previous entry on this list (Venusaur), it is – to the surprise of many Pokémon fans – possible to locate this Pokémon in the wild.

That being said, finding a wild Blastoise would probably feel a lot like winning the lottery. Althoughmost people cannot say for certain, because most people have neither won the lottery nor caught a wild Blastoise. Okay, so it might not be quite that rare, but still, hours upon hours of Pokémon Gohave been logged by millions of players around the world over the past few weeks, and the vast majority of the game's players have yet to obtain or even encounter a wild Blastoise.

12. Charizard

15 Rarest Pokémon in Pokémon Go And How To Find Them (5)

As the third and final of the starter evolutions, everything stated in the previous two entries applies equally – if not more so – to Charizard. Charizard is one of the franchise's most popular characters, and thusly, this Pokémon is extremely hard to come by in the viral mobile game from Niantic and The Pokémon Company. As alluded to earlier, fire-type Pokémon encountersare, for the most part, extremely uncommon for most players and that certainly goes double for Charizard.

Again, reports of wild Charizard sightings across the web have proven that these creatures do, in fact, exist in the game, and are obtainable without having to evolve Charmander, but even still, only the extremely lucky few find that their paths cross with this rare fire and flying-type. On a list of fan's most desired Pokémon list in Pokémon Go, Charizard would probably rank fairly high, making that moment players finally capture it all the more epic.

11. Aerodactyl

15 Rarest Pokémon in Pokémon Go And How To Find Them (6)

In the original series of Pokémon games –Pokémon Red,Blue, andYellow Versions – Aerodactyl was an extremely rare late game find, so it comes asno surprise that the sameholds true for Pokémon Goas well. While reported sightings of this ancient rock and flying-type creature are not completely unheard of, they are certainly uncommon encounters indeed.

The most common method of obtaining an Aerodacty is perhaps by hatching a 10km egg. Eggs are, of course, broken up into three different categories, the 2km, the 5km, and the 10km variety, the latter usually featuring the game's rarest Pokémon. Eggs can be obtained at real-world locations (aptly namedPoké Stops)using the Pokémon Goapp, but the only problem is that the type of egg you receive (if one is received one at all) is seemingly random. So, not only is it impossible to tell which rare creature will emerge from a hatched egg, it is additionally impossible to determine which type of egg a player will receive from the aforementioned Poké Stops.

10. Tauros

15 Rarest Pokémon in Pokémon Go And How To Find Them (7)

North American players may feel as though Tauros is not deserving of being on this list – although still fairly rare even among trainers stateside – but that may only apply to trainers in the North AmericaIt is rumored that certain Pokémon are only attainable (in the wild) in select regions across the world. For example, Tauros is a Pokémon that is (rumored to be) only available for players in North America. There are, however, other Pokémon that arespeculated to only be available in other regions of the world: Australia, Japan, and Europe for example.

This is not to say, however, that these creatures cannot be obtained by trainers in other countries, as these Pokémon can all still be added to players respective Pokedex's via the egg hatching system. Unlike some of the other rare Pokémon in the game, Tauros' are only obtainable through the game's second tier egg, the 5km egg. As stated before, the 10 km variety of eggs are the ones in which the most uncommon Pokémon (generally) are hatched (in addition to Eevee for some reason), but the 5km egg can potentially hatch a much larger number of Pokémon, making it even less likely that the creature being hatched is, in fact, a Tauros.

Still, for Pokémon Go players Stateside, Tauros might be a far easier find, but for those with the app in other countries, the raging, two-tailed bull is certainly much harder to come by.

9. Snorlax

15 Rarest Pokémon in Pokémon Go And How To Find Them (8)

This sleepy giant reigns as one of the game's most popular characters (outside of the three starters, Pikachu, and a small handful of other iconic characters), and much like a number of the franchise's most popular Pokémon from the first generation, Snorlax is extremely rare inPokémon Go.

If there is a theme to this list, it is probably egg hatching, and that is no different with Snorlax. Perhaps the easiest way ("easy" being a relative term) to add Snorlax to your Pokédex is by hatching it in a – you guessed it – 10 km egg. 10km eggs might be tough to come by and may take a while to hatch, but if rare Pokémon is what you are after, then that is arguably the best way to do it.Pokémon Gois all about going out into the real world and walking around, and the egg gameplay mechanic is probably the best example of that. There are certainly a few ways in which a handful of users have discovered in order to cheat the walking system, but walking is honestly the best way to catch new Pokémon. Not only does it help eggs to hatch, but there is always a chance of running into a rare and powerful creature while on the move rather than on the couch at home.

8. Lapras

15 Rarest Pokémon in Pokémon Go And How To Find Them (9)

Lapras has gained notoriety from being one of the companions of the anime's main character, Ash Ketchum. Additionally, the character was one of the rarerPokémon in the original series of games, making this water/ice-type all the more unique and desirable. Lapras may not have any evolutions, but that has not stopped this Pokémon from being one of the most seldom encountered in all ofPokémon Go.

Coming across a wild Lapras is almost unheard of for most gamers, but it is, of course, hatchable using a 10km egg. There are 17 possible Pokémon that could be hatched from an egg, so this still leaves players with a fairly slim chance of actually adding the rare Pokémon to their respective teams. There are a few gyms out there sporting this uncommon beast, but they are most likely the lucky few who were fortunate enough to hatch a Lapras from a 10km egg.

7. Porygon

15 Rarest Pokémon in Pokémon Go And How To Find Them (10)

If you were to ask Pokémon fans which Pokémon they thought would be among the top 10 most rare inPokémon Gobefore the app went absolutely viral, there would have likely been a laundry list of creatures they would have rattled off before getting to Porygon.

Porygon is almost a myth out in the wild, although it has been seen by a small number of players. That being said, the incredibly uncommon Pokémon does not require a 10km egg like a large number of its rare cohorts on this list. Like Tauros, Porygon can be obtained by hatching a 5km egg. While this may sound a lot easier than finding and hatching a 10km egg – seeing as how a player only has to walk half the distance – it really is not. While there are 17 possible Pokémon that can be hatched from a 10km egg, there are 42 different characters that could possibly emerge from a 5km egg, and there is always the possibility of hatching the same Pokémon twice or more. Suffice it to say, gamers have to be pretty lucky to come across this rare Pokémon.

6. Kangaskhan

15 Rarest Pokémon in Pokémon Go And How To Find Them (11)

Much like Tauros, Kangaskhan is a Pokémon that is rumored to be region specific. Unlike Tauros, however, the rumored region is Australia, which is great for all of those Pokémon fans down under, but fairly unfortunate for players living on one of the other six continents.

Kangaskhan has been an absolute beast in the world of competitive Pokémon video games, and to coincide with character's popularity, it is extremely hard to find withinPokémon Go. Again, like Tauros, even for Pokémon trainers out in Austraila, Kangaskhan is not a creature that comes along all that often. It is still an extremely rare Pokémon, which many experienced players have yet to add to their respective Pokédex.

Additionally, Kangaskhan can be hatched in a 5km egg, but good luck; there is quite a large number of Pokémon that could emerge from the aforementioned 5km egg.

5. Mr. Mime

15 Rarest Pokémon in Pokémon Go And How To Find Them (12)

As one of the franchise's more unique characters, Mr. Mime stands out as a memorable character from both the Pokémon anime as well as the game series. Additionally, the humanoid creature is a real pain to find inPokémon Go. Like Kangaskhan and Tauros, Mr. Mime shares the distinction of being one of the game's region-specific Pokémon. As of right now, it is rumored that only those playing the game in Europe are able to find Mr. Mime in the wild. As stated with Kangaskhan, however, that is not to say that wild Mr. Mimes are roaming the streets of Europe in droves just waiting to be caught. As it so happens, they are still extremely rare, even across the pond.

A 10km egg is currently the only way for non-European players to obtain the uber-rare Pokémon at this time, but as earlier stated, there is a lot of luck involved with that method. Simply put, for those of you looking to complete your respective Pokédexs and collect all 151 different creatures, Mr. Mime is likely to be one of the later Pokémon you catch.

4. Farfetch'd

15 Rarest Pokémon in Pokémon Go And How To Find Them (13)

Farfetch'd is certainly one of the franchise's more cherished characters, and additionally, it is one ofPokémon Go's rarest creatures. This bird Pokémon is the last of the rumored region-specific creatures, this time, hailing from the island nation of Japan. Oddly enough, however, the birthplace of Pokémon itself has yet to see the insanely popular app launch (at the time this article was written) in its home country. Although this is likely to change within the coming days.

Again, thatleaves only one method for obtaining the elusive Farfetch'd – the 5km egg. This countdown has already stated the many frustrations of this method, but seeing as how eggs are currently the only game in town in regard to completing to the all important Pokédex, it's worth a shot. Trading has been rumored to be coming in an update in the near future, but until then, and untilPokémon Gofinally launches in Japan, Farfetch'd remainone of the mobile game's rarest creatures.

3. Dragonite

15 Rarest Pokémon in Pokémon Go And How To Find Them (14)

So there are a few players out there who have caught a Dragonite in their kitchens making a midnight snack or even while out retrieving their morning papers, but other than those few ultra-lucky individuals, this incredibly popular Pokémon from both the game franchise and the anime is extremely, extremelyrare. Seriously, this thing is ridiculouslyhard to find.

Firstly, the Pokémon's unevolved form, Dratini, is even fairly rare; so rare, in fact, that they are hatched in 10km eggs. That's right, Dragonites are not even hatchable in the current egg system withinPokémon Go. That means the only two ways of obtaining a Dragonite at this point is either by catching enough Dratinis and Dragonairs to evolve up to the fan-favorite dragon-type, or by simply finding a Dragonite out in the wild; both methods relying solely on luck. The way it stands right now, it seems as though only the most dedicated (or perhaps the incredibly lucky) trainers have obtained, or can obtain, a Dragonite.

2. The Legendaries

15 Rarest Pokémon in Pokémon Go And How To Find Them (15)

There have been a lot of rumors and speculation surrounding thefive legendary Pokémon. It has been reported that some players have, in fact, seen and even captured one or two of these uber-rare creatures, but these rumors have been quickly shot down. As it stands right now, Articuno, Moltres, Zapdos, Mew, and Mewtwo are not yetavailable inPokémon Go.

The leading rumor at this point in time is that these five legendary Pokémon will be obtainable through community events – as seen with Mewtwo in the originalPokémon Gotrailer. One player has stated that the coding for these legendaries is, in fact, in the game, but they have yet to release these "so called" event matches to the public as they will likely be available in later updates.

There are still a lot of questions surrounding these five Pokémon, but with all of the hype radiating from this game, we would not be surprised to hear some sort of news concerning these legendary beasts in the near future.

1. Ditto

15 Rarest Pokémon in Pokémon Go And How To Find Them (16)

Surprisingly topping this list at the number one spot is none other than Ditto. Okay, so no one is exactly sure why Ditto is so difficult to locate inPokémon Go, but up to this point, no one has been able tocapture this elusive Pokémon. There are rumors that breeding will be available in future updates, and for those unfamiliar with the core Pokémon game franchise, breeding plays a major role from the second generation onwards, but this is still mere speculation and has yet to be confirmed.

That being said, Pokémon breeding may explainwhy Ditto has yet to be seen. If trading is the number one core gameplay mechanic for the main series of Pokémongames, then breeding is not far behind. The creators of the game stated at this last year's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) that they wanted players to get full use out ofPokémon Go's main functions before unloading even more gameplay features. So, it would make sense why breeding has not yet been implemented – along with trading. Still, it is uncertain as to how breeding would be utilized inPokémon Go, assuming this rumor is, in fact, true. Nevertheless, Ditto stands out among all of the original 151 Pokémon, as the rarest in all ofPokémon Go– for now at least.

Honorable Mentions: A few names that just missed the cut for this list are: Gyarados, Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee, and Chansey. The latter three are incredibly rare in the wild, and like a number of other Pokémon on this list, are annoyingly obtainable through the hatching of 10km eggs. Additionally, Gyarados is incredibly difficult to find in the wild, and almost equally as difficult, is the task of grinding through obtaining a whopping 400 Magikarp candies in order to evolve the useless Pokémon into what we all really want.

What are some Pokémon that you feel are ultra-rare inPokémon Go? Do you have any Pokémon from this list? Make sure to let us know in the comments section.
